LIGHTNING PRESENTATION TITLE: Hay Inc Rural Education Program
HOST: Hay Inc
Sandra Ireson, Founding Executive Director and Program Manager
DESCRIPTION:
Learn how the small rural community of Hay NSW, in challenging times 9 years ago have set up their own not for profit group which developed a unique “hands on” on education program delivered on working properties in the district, to give young people a pathway into a career in agriculture. With a focus on networking, mentoring and mateship the program has brought young people back into the community with many now working on local farms. The training program engages industry, Government, and generous volunteers willing to pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation. Hay Inc has set up a sustainable program which covers practical skills from low stress stock handling to natural resource management, working dog training and shearing skills. They have an Alumni of previous participants which they continue to support and mentor. There have been 130 young people aged 18 to 25 taking part in the program. They have also developed Engage Ag which documents how this community program evolved and is a tool kit for other communities interested in developing a similar program.
