The importance of prioritising food and fibre education in schools
As Australia’s urban and rural areas become more disconnected, traditional ties to primary industries are diminishing. The decline in focus on farming and primary industries poses significant risks to Australia’s economy and food security, leading to economic instability, job loss in rural areas, and increased reliance on imports. To combat this, the Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia (PIEFA) promotes the importance of the food and fibre sector through education. Supported by the Australian Government, the education and primar industries sectors, PIEFA creates curriculum-aligned classroom resources to assist teachers with their lesson planning. With an emphasis on starting education at a young age, PIEFA collaborates with rural research and development corporations to ensure the educational content that is taught in schools is up-to-date and relevant. PIEFA’s resources, available on the Primezone website, are developed by teachers for teachers and include professional development programs to build teacher confidence. By fostering a better understanding of food and fibre production, PIEFA aims to ensure a prosperous future for Australia.
Ag Institute Australia (AIA) represents agricultural and natural resource management professionals in Australia. The journal is an independent resource for professionals engaged in agriculture and natural resource management to inform each other and the general community of significant scientific developments in relevant disciplines.
