School Food & Fibre Initiatives
Discover inspiring school-based initiatives that integrate food and fibre into the curriculum
Food and fibre initiatives within schools can provide students with important hands-on learning, encouraging valuable skill development through real world experience. Regardless of the size of the school or location, we encourage educators to explore the ways your school can get involved in food and fibre education, beyond the agriculture subject area. It’s a fantastic way to understand the intricacies of food and fibre production and the career opportunities in Australian primary industries.
PIEFA are pleased to share with you inspiring food and fibre programs that have been implemented by our school members from across Australia.
SCHOOL FOOD & FIBRE CASE STUDY // Boonah State High School
Boonah State High School held its first ever Paddock to Plate event in 2023, offering a luxury dining experience featuring produce grown and harvested by the students themselves.
This event allowed students to apply industry skills in real-life scenarios, showcasing the collaborative efforts of the school’s engineering, hospitality, agriculture, and construction students. Hospitality students worked closely with a professional chef to plan a seasonal menu and agricultural students executed a horticultural project, growing seasonal produce like broad beans, snow peas, radishes, carrots, beetroots, and basil, which were all featured on the menu.
