New Report Highlights Strategies to Build Resilience and Careers in Agriculture
PIEFA is proud to have contributed to a new research report developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), Building Resilience and Careers in Agriculture. The report explores how education can play a vital role in strengthening agricultural career pathways and building resilience in the industry—an issue that has never been more relevant in the wake of climate challenges and workforce shortages.
PIEFA’s involvement in this research was made possible through the Storm and Flood Industry Recovery Program (SFIRP), an initiative designed to support communities impacted by floods by strengthening education and career pathways in food and fibre industries. Through SFIRP, PIEFA has been working closely with educators and industry stakeholders to equip students and educators with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in agriculture.
Key Findings
The report identifies several factors that influence young people’s perceptions of agricultural careers, including:
- The impact of hands-on learning and real-world industry exposure
- The role of career education in shaping students’ aspirations
- The need for clearer pathways into agricultural careers
- The importance of resilience-building skills to prepare future workers for industry challenges
These insights align with PIEFA’s mission to provide teachers with the tools and resources they need to bring food and fibre education into their classrooms. Through initiatives such as our flagship platform, Primezone, and ongoing collaborations with industry, we are committed to ensuring that young Australians see agriculture as an exciting and viable career choice.
What This Means for Educators
For educators, this report reinforces the need to integrate agriculture, sustainability, and career education across multiple subject areas. Whether through classroom discussions, hands-on activities, or direct industry engagement, bringing real-world agriculture into schools can have a lasting impact on students’ aspirations and workforce readiness.
